Welcome to my blog.
I am a primary school teacher from Sydney, Australia. I blog in a personal capacity as a free-thinking professional. My views do not necessarily reflect the views of my employer.
The foundation of this blog can be found in a commencement speech titled This Is Water by David Foster Wallace. He tells the story of the two young fish.
“There are these two young fish swimming along and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the other way who nods at them and says, “Morning boys, how’s the water?” And the two young fish swim on for a bit and eventually, one of them looks over at the other and goes, “What the hell is water?”
Water becomes so ubiquitous to a fish that it ceases to exist. The point of the fish story is that the most obvious, important realities are often the ones that are hardest to see and talk about. So often in education, we fail to stop and question the ubiquitous ideas and beliefs that guide what we do in the classroom. This blog seeks to find some objective truth in that very sea of ubiquity.

And finally, echoing Wallace’s own words, please do not mistake me for the wise older fish. I’m not. I’ve only just discovered the water.
